High Above Hawai'i...

The domes of Mauna Kea, taken from down on the road near Waimea
Jaymie always goes on about how a trip to the Hawaiian observatory is HARDLY a tropical vacation - after seeing this, the lodge for visiting astronomers at 9000 feet, I'll never feel sorry for him again!
The Keck observatory from outside, showing one of the twin domes.
Portrait of the photographer, reflected in the ultra-smooth reflective surface of one of the Keck's hexagonal mirrors, which are rotated in and out of service for cleaning and polishing on a regular basis.
The Keck mirror, showing the array of hexagonal mirrors, each with its own adaptive optics.
The OLD - the mechanics of the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) - once at the forefront of technology
and the NEW - the smaller lighter package of the new Gemini - the most modern, at the forefront of TODAY's technology
The Gemini dome
The sun sets over a sea of clouds
Silhouette of the cluster of observatories on the summit - an almost IDENTICAL photo recently appeared on the cover of "Sky and Telescope" or a similar magazine, AFTER my return... Hmmmph!
